Sheila in Melbourne with Yvette O'Dowd

theage.com.au Feb 28 2003

A Federal Government minister, the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women critisised Victoria Labour MP Kirstie Marshall for breastfeeding her 13 day old baby in State Parliament. " I want to see more family friendly workplaces for all women but my main concerns are with helping everyday women with everyday jobs.

Sheila Kitzinger, in Melbourne for an Australian Breastfeeding Association seminar, said the incident showed that Parliament was still "an old men's club".
"This is violating human rights - the human rights of babies to be fed, the human rights of mothers, and the human rights of fathers" she said " I thought Australia was a progressive society"

Thank you the ones who organized and let us know about the fifth annual symposium for mothers, at Stanford University on last Saturday...

... Ms. Kitzinger was surprising and the way she expressed her thoughts was very strong again capturing and unifying. Her jokes were outrageously beautiful and meaningful, her thoughts about peace, today's world and suffering moms were well expressed, well taken with a great appreciation by me, I am so happy to see such researchers and writers out here and passing information to us and to world. ...
